Nathan Kurzmann has spent most of his life surrounded by wilderness in Alaska. He was influenced by art at an early age by his artist grandparents on both sides of his family. Nathan began a journey of fulfilling his dream of being a painter. In 2004, he attended the Academy of Art University of San Francisco and achieved a BFA in painting. He had the opportunity to exhibit his works in many group shows at the academy. After graduating he enriched his talent at an in-artist residency program at the Vermont Studio Center. In 2010, he moved back to Alaska and has continued to show his work at a variety of venues. In August 2011, he was recognized in the local community arts magazine 'F Magazine'. Nathan’s work displays his passion for the great outdoors through his landscapes and energetic images of water. His artwork is continuously evolving and he is always trying new things.
I developed my natural instincts from my love of the great outdoors. I enjoy representing my paintings in various ways. Describing feeling through color, brush strokes, objects of interest and moments in time. The imitation of my landscapes is not literal but more of an abstraction of shape and color. Playing with dark's and cools and pushing them just enough to notice, is something I try to invigorate. My works show variations in style from expressive to traditional blending. I am still on a journey of finding what I enjoy most. Both styles have there own beauty, and challenges. An enjoyment from each process makes it difficult to choose one or the other. I believe there is no reason not to hold yourself to just one style or application. Trying new mediums, surfaces, subject matter keeps painting enjoyable and more interesting.
